Improvising

The weekend was full of the usual suspects and the usual routine. But then there were the glitches.

First off, instead of trying any of the recipes that I was very determined to try from the last post ... I decided to make Chewy Sugar Cookies instead. Even though I had bread flour and seven eggs and honey for the Castella cake.

But that's just how things go sometimes. The winds of change ... well, they change, ha!

The cookies are good. I know this, because there are none left. I believe it's the buttermilk that gives them their tenderness. Now, this IS a quick recipe. Remember if you don't have buttermilk, you can just make your own with 1 cup of milk and 1 tablespoon of vinegar :)

That just leaves me with the knitting glitches. I'll make it plural since the first thing I did was misplace my Undine socks. I'm ALMOST done with the first sock! I could feel that momentum pulling me to finish it off and cast on the second! I feel confident despite the baby knitting that I should be doing that I'm not doing I will finish this KAL on time. Whoo to the hoo!

I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

But I did find the project bag, and that in itself my friends deserves a weekend blue ribbon ;)

So the final glitch is that I'm definitely going to run out of yarn for the baby blanket I'm knitting. I could definitely frog it and cast on again, reducing the width. It would definitely provide me enough length for a decent color block design if I still don't have enough yarn ... but I can't.

I like the width. I've come so far. I kept knitting anyways.

I know you're asking. The yarn is discontinued.

Yes, I found a ball on Etsy. I don't know. Is it worth it? I am still knitting. I figure if I must scrap patch it, I can always use it for a charity blanket.

Okay so la-dee-da ... wha'ts the back up plan. I don't know what gender the baby is so I have decided against a sweater. I am not sure why.

I have some wool blend bulky yarn that is my back up plan for a bulky baby blanket in stripes like this. Hope I have enough yarn ...

  1. Sending good vibes that the yarn goes all the way to the end.

  2. Yes, I think I'd keep knitting as well. So frustrating, I do hope you manage to get it to the right size. The cookies look good,, shame there are none left. Well done on the timely sock knitting, I shall look forward to seeing two socks on your next post. CJ xx

  3. I keep my on the needles projects to a minimum so I have never lost one-made me laugh that you did! Frustrating about the yarn shortage....sure does make you lose the love for the project! Yum to the sugar cookies!

  4. Mmm.....cookies.
I have so many things going that I lose things all the time. They turn up usually in a bag I've put somewhere so I wouldn't lose it. Cleaning out the stash room is like fiber Christmas.

  5. An empty cookie jar is a sign that the recipe was a good one, and that you need to whip up another batch.

I'd keep knitting on e blanket, too, especially since you found more yarn.

  6. I could seriously use a double batch of those cookies right now. Yummy! I got my own knitting glitches going on so I can sympathize with yours.I'd keep knitting and see where we get. If the yarn cost wasn't outrageous I would consider purchasing it if I new it would get me to the end and to a FO!

  7. So the blanket project is the garter stitch, camo one? I say keep going. I think making stripes with it may look funny unless...the other colors match the individual colors in the camo. Fun cookies. You know it's a hit when they're wiped out but at the same time, I'm like dang it, after all that work.

  9. what about picking up on each end of the width a constrasting color and knit out sideways. That would make it look like it was done on purpose and I bet it would look swell. Good luck! I love that feeling of not knowing if I have enough yarn, only when I have enough yarn...

  10. Baby hats and booties always make a great baby gift - and they are relatively quick!

  11. Isn't this just the way...running out of discontinued yarn and misplacing project bags. Can you make a border around the blanket with different yarn?

  12. OH, NOOOOOO! But you could always get very creative....and change color, and do some kind of embroidery along the color change to make it look very artsy and on-purpose. (drag, though--boo) Glad you found the sock bag---hate when I do that. (I HAVE done that a lot---hate when knitting goes MIA)

  13. Im a huge fan of all things buttermilk. Irish soda bread is lost without. it The cornmeal pancakes from scratch, I just made have buttermilk in them. I keep powdered buttermilk in the pantry just in case, but I prefer liquid buttermilk.

I couldnt do all that glorious garter because I can't pick up garter mistakes and I would stitch in fear of making a mistake.

You are the BOSS of your knitting! do as you wish!

  14. Running out of yarn is no fun, but I wouldn't be able to frog back either. Could you still do a color block effect? The back up blanket is adorable and would be so fast to knit up.

  18. Good luck and I'm crossing my fingers and toes that you don't run out of yarn. I did run out on my white Bricklayer baby blanket and couldn't find more of the yarn I was using. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to match white yarn. White is white, right? Not so much. I finally found two skeins of I Love This Yarn that is closer than close. I think it is going to be okay.
