Stash Etiquette: What say you?

So I have been trying to avoid a new year's resolution post. I hate setting myself up for disappointment, since I do it on a regular basis anyhow -- there really is no need for me to get that much more public about my shortcomings ...

But I have one. One that I want to discuss and I need your input on, because I'm beyond thinking for myself.

I am still working hard on letting go. Letting go of all kinds of things: disappointment; anxiety; and of course physical, material items. This is where I need your help. I have stuff. I have a stash and I don't need all of it. But I still want some of it.

I want to be happy. I want less ... stuff. I like to give stuff away. (Do you see where I'm going with this?)

There is a local social working group, that needs some crafting/knitting supplies I am working on a box for, but what about you guys?

I have some other items that I know I probably won't use but would like to give a home. Pattern books or  knitting magazine issues in good condition, and yes ... yarn.

What if I offered to give away something once a month from my stash -- I can commit myself to the post office once a month (though I have a tendency to be allergic to the Post in the month of December). I would pay for the shipping. If you are interested you leave me a comment. If there is more than one comment than I raffle it off.

Is this weird? Is this tacky? Is this OK?

  1. It sounds like a good way to get stuff out of your stash and share. Its not weird, lots of people hold contests, etc. and give prizes from their stash. BTW - I am also allergic to the post office in December ... very, VERY allergic .... maybe even phobic!

  2. That's a good idea. You can always trade with your knitting group too. If the yarn's not too precious, you can donate to schools who have a knitting club. This woman found my knitting group and was cleaning out her mum's stuff. She donated everything to us and whatever my group didn't want, I gave to to the childcare program. The director's eyes popped wide open and her mouth dropped at all the craft yarn that was donated.

    1. I definitely have plans for the less precious stuff to go to the school social workers and the after school care program is great. Crap, I think I owe them money for this month! Thanks for the reminder Kepanie!

  3. IT IS WONDERFUL. I want to win! count me in!!!!!! I get the whole POST OFFICE thing….but once I mail something out I'm so happy. I try to keep things in envelopes and it keeps the cost down as opposed to boxes.

  5. I'm trying to declutter my house, too. I'll pass on the opportunity to win, but I'll cheer for those who enter.

  7. I think it is a great idea as someones clutter can be someone else's treasure. I am de-cluttering all the papers and things around my desk, clothes in my closet and general stuff we do not need. When you give things away, I thin it opens your mind and heart to new things. A monthly giveaway is brilliant.

  10. I completely understand the need to de-clutter. Sometimes "thing" can be overwhelming, just by their mere presence. I see nothing at all wrong with having giveaways and donating. Good for you love!
Also another option is destashing on Ravelry. Then at least you can maybe get some money for the yarns your purchased. That is not greedy, especially in these economic time. :)

  11. i think its a great idea! i too, have been decluttering...our library received our collection of movies, cds & books (not all but a lot). they have a sale a few times a year and the money benefits the childrens summer reading program. a win win situation!
my yarn stash is not too bad...lots of little leftovers but enough for some hats & such~ my plan is to join lorixfive for her africa project

  12. Decluttering is always good - don't want to show up on "Hoarders"! I have a knitting friend who knits prayer shawls, so I gave her all my acrylic and Fun Fur a few years ago, as that is what she usually uses. Another knitting friend has a daughter-in-law who is allergic to wool - maybe I will pass on that linen yarn to her. Now you've got me thinking - great!
